Minutes Count

Let’s get right to it: So many of us avoid, or obsess about, or are in terror of the end of life. Answers to this reality are simple. Let’s begin with one of our most remarkable ancient philosophers, Marcus Aurelius – yes, the roman emperor who ruled 161-180 CE – one of the “good emperors,” and the same emperor in The Gladiator. Think of him visiting with Maximus in his tent just after crushing the last of the Germanic tribes as he reflected on his legacy and life lessons learned:

Think of the life you have lived until now as over and, as a dead man, see what’s left as a bonus, and live it according to Nature. Love the hand that fate deals you and play it as your own, for what could be more fitting?

So, I begin a theme we will visit and revisit. Let’s dissect a bit. What Marcus really asks above is, “How do you die well?” The simple answer is to live well. When you contemplate the reality of your life ending, the correct response is to make the time you have left count even if you are old. Every day counts, even minutes count. So…

Think about this.
